For those that don’t know, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and where you grew up?
My name’s Ellie, I’m a 20-year-old bebé born and raised in Melbourne, Australia.
Where do you spend most of your time now?
In my head – daydreaming about adventures across the globe. Other than that, either in the city at uni, at a cafe with friends, or behind my computer screen!
When did you start blogging?
Although I’ve always wanted to seriously start blogging, I only plucked up the courage to finally launch Illicit Empress in March this year. Growing up, I used to run a handful of pop/alt culture, fashion and art blogs that were never really about me or my own work – they were mostly just projects of passion that gave me a platform to practice writing.
What does a day in the life of yourself look like?
It’s incredibly non-glamorous – I wake up with a coffee, play with my dog, reassess my to do lists and schedules, and embark on my day. Whether it’s a photoshoot, an interview, a class, a meeting or a social catch up, I like to keep every day busy – my need to remain productive is near pathological! As long as I am collaborating, developing or achieving something, I’m happy.
We love your style! Who or what inspires your amazing outfit choices?
Definitely those around me who are fearless and passionate in their experimentation with style – my friends who are invested in fashion, whether they are designers, stylists, photographers, or hair and makeup artists, all have their own unique and breathtaking style that never ceases to inspire me.
Any advice for other up and coming fashion bloggers out there?
I haven’t been doing this too long myself, so I’m not sure how authorised I am to give out advice – but I’ve quickly learned that consistency is key. Also, retaining a sense of flexibility and openness to try new things – with how quickly things seem to change in the digital realm, it’s imperative that you are able to adapt to new trends and patterns.
What are three things you can’t live without?
Friends, family and a sense of humour!
In 5 years, where do you see yourself?
Hopefully, I’ll be travelling the world, working in a job I love with the best of the best, and achieving huge new things.
What does being ’stylish’ mean to you?
Being able to channel an idea or concept into a cohesive look – being “stylish” is a learned skill like any other, one that can be developed and practiced. Once you realise that, your taste quickly becomes your best weapon.
